JUNE:

June 10-14 | Nature's Song |Levels: You & Me, Preschool

Nature’s song can be heard moving through a willow’s branches, in water flowing over rock or emerging from the throat of a bull frog.  We’ll sing our own song and set out through meadow and forest in search of nature’s version of the same. This week is designed with the littlest explorers in mind. They’ll engage their creative spirit with crafts, burn off some of their boundless energy in structured play and take memories and stories of their daily adventures home.

Half Day Morning (9am- 12:00pm) :
Grade: You & Me | Preschool

June 17-21 | Outdoor Skills |Levels: K-2, 3-5, 6+

The ability to decipher clues and develop reasonable conclusions is pivotal to survival. In a twist on our popular Outdoor Skills camp, a mysterious character and video clues will introduce our topic of the day. Participants will have to solve a mystery to locate necessary equipment to carry out our planned activity. Our week will still contain plenty of basic survival and recreational skills like geocaching, compass skills, setting up a campsite, foraging and cooking over a campfire. SPECIAL GUEST! Arborists from Joshua Tree will harness and hoist campers in 3-5 to reach a tree canopy during morning session.

*Campers in 6+ will hike the Appalachian Trail and visit Lehigh Gap Nature Center.

June 24-28 | Wild Things |Levels: You & Me, Preschool, K-2, 3-5, 6+

Have you ever observed an owl so closely that you can see the down of its feathers or hear the soft sounds it makes? Have you seen the iridescence of a butterfly wing under a microscope or witnessed a skunk’s warning stomp? We have, and we love to offer that experience to others. This week, campers will look for monarch caterpillars in meadows, search out nesting bird families, scoop ponds, lift logs and examine rocks from the Little Lehigh Creek. If it’s a wild thing, our mission is to seek it out. By week’s end, campers will have earned their Wildlands Conservancy Jr. Naturalist badge.

JULY:

July 1-5 (no class July 4)* | Outside Art |Levels: K-2, 3-5, 6+

A person’s art is uniquely his or her own. And difference in perspective leads to exciting discoveries about the range and beauty of interpretation. Each day, participants will be immersed in a different topic. We’ll float in and look under water before we paint our impression of what we see. We’ll meet creatures and examine plants and trees before we turn the essence of those experiences into art. This week allows children to understand the biodiversity found in the natural world and to view it through each other’s eyes. We will use different techniques to create arts and crafts inspired by nature. Drawing, painting and other basic art forms will be explored. SPECIAL GUEST! A teaching artist from the Baum School of Art will join us for one morning session.

*Fee: $140 for half-day camp; $220 for full-day camp; pre and post camp $24 each

July 22-26 | Science in Nature |Levels: You & Me, Preschool, K-2, 3-5, 6+

Inventors and engineers often take inspiration from nature. The first telescope is 3,000 years old. Lime was used to create concrete 2,000 years ago. Man has always observed and experimented with elements found in nature. Maybe the young engineer in your home is experimenting with kitchen sink science, dismantling non-functioning electronics or simply observing everything outdoors. All things fit together physically and chemically and support other life in a myriad of ways. This week is all about STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. We’ll incorporate our fun approach to solve problems, experiment and build. SPECIAL GUEST! Da Vinci Science Center will work with the campers in K-2 and 3-5 during the morning sessions.

August 19-23 | Ecowarriors |Levels: K-2, 3-5, 6+

Planet Earth is a wonder. While we can’t explore the entire Earth in a week; we can dig into the fields, forest, waterway and ponds of Pool Wildlife Sanctuary. Campers will get to know the living things that inhabit our corner of the Earth and how historic figures helped to preserve and improve the environment. Simple everyday habits can have a negative impact on nature, and a slight adjustment can wipe out that impact. Local ecowarriors will teach us what people, young and old alike, can do to make our lives and all of nature better.
