We’ll have a great vantage point on the deck at the Environmental Center to see the elk pen plus the meadows and forests at Trexler. We’ll have a short tour of the LEED-certified Trexler Environmental Center and review the recreational opportunities at Trexler Nature Preserve. The TEC building has earned Gold Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification for its environmentally friendly features and construction. The building houses satellite offices for the County Parks Department and PA Bureau of Forestry, as well as a lovely community room for environmental education and other meetings. Then we’ll walk on some of the many trails at Trexler. The 1,108-acre Nature Preserve, home of the Lehigh Valley Zoo, was originally owned by General Harry C. Trexler, a successful lumber merchant and a founder of Lehigh Portland Cement Company. Trexler created the Preserve to protect bison, elk, and white-tail deer. Sturdy footwear is recommended. The walk is appropriate for children of all ages. Dogs on leash are welcome. Bring binoculars and/or camera to observe the elk from the deck on top of the Trexler Environmental Center. Bathrooms are in the TEC, and are accessible from outside the building.
