River Conditions to Next Access Point: 

Class III Rapids This section's Class III whitewater, best from mid-March to June, should be attempted by intermediate and expert boaters only.  NO open boats are permitted without flotation devices installed in your boat.

Linkages:

  • Lehigh Gorge Trail: The trail runs south from White Haven through Rockport and Penn Haven to Glen Onoko - 26 miles in total.  It is part of the D & L Trail.
  • Lehigh Gorge State Park
  • Main Street amenities in White Haven include various restaurants, a shopping center, a river outfitter, a bakery, and more.
  • Exploring Audubon's Lehigh: A recorded "auto-tour" is available from the D & L Corridor Commission (see link below).
  • Historical Attractions: High-lift locks #29 and #28 located nearby.

Access Point Orientation and Description:
Access point is on RIVER RIGHT.  The area is a large, flat, grass-and-sand beach with several eddies located just offshore under the I-80 (automobile) bridge.

Locating the Access Point from the River:
Access is on RIVER RIGHT just downriver from the I-80 (automobile) bridge.

Directions to Access Point Parking/Unloading Area by Land:
From I-476 (Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike) take Exit 95.   Turn right onto Route 940 West and go 3.8 miles to White Haven.   Go across the large bridge (over the Lehigh River) and turn left into the Thriftway Shopping Center parking lot.   Passing through the parking lot, go 0.3 mile to the parking lot for the access point.

Access Point Location:
A 100-foot dirt road leads from the northern edge of the parking lot to the river access beneath the I-80 (automobile) bridge.  There is ample room to maneuver a vehicle beneath the bridge, however the road is not open to the public on busy weekends when commercial outfitters are in operation.  When the road is closed, boats can be carried to the water's edge.

  • Hiking, biking, wildlife watching on the adjacent Lehigh Gorge Trail
  • Parking for 150+ vehicles
  • Hunting, fishing in season

Ownership and maintenance:

  • Pennsylvania Department of Conservation & Natural Resources, Bureau of State Parks/Lehigh Gorge State Park

Present Use and Conditions:

  • This access is used extensively by whitewater boaters and commercial rafting outfitters.  The Pennsylvania DCNR Bureau of State Parks has set maximum boating capacities on the river for commercial outfitters at 800 craft per day.
  • The parking area is used by boaters as well as Lehigh Gorge Trail users.
  • Fishing is permitted in the park during seasons established by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission.
  • Hunting is permitted in the park during seasons established by the Pennsylvania Game Commission.
  • The Lehigh Gorge Trail parallels the river on RIVER RIGHT and provides emergency river access for park rangers and emergency medical equipment.  In addition, there are several stations along the river that provide backboards for emergency medical use. 
  • Please exercise proper river etiquette so others may safely enjoy this resource.
