From 1990 through 2002, over 5,450 acres were preserved through conservation easements, benefiting the landowner(s), the community, and the environment. And in 2003, 1,238 more acres were added for a grand total of 6,688 acres protected as open space (and from further development) to-date!

Of the 46,000 acres, over 40,000 of these acres have been turned over to public ownership for recreational activities such as hiking, biking, fishing, and hunting. In 2003 alone, 4,728 acres were preserved through fee acquisition and private donations.
