Green Roofs

On Earth Day, April 22, 2003, volunteers and Conservancy staff planted the green roof on the newly constructed Environmental Enrichment Center at the Pool Wildlife Sanctuary. Over 5,500 plants of nine different varieties (eight difference sedums and Talinum calycinum) are thriving despite the harsh conditions.

Advantages of a Green Roof
According to studies conducted at Penn State University, in Europe, and elsewhere, green roofs can provide significant advantages in many applications.
  • Environmental Education CenterA green roof increases the effectiveness of the existing insulation, thereby reducing the use of fossil fuels needed for heating and cooling.
  • A green roof cools the surrounding air. In fact, by respirating the retained water, it can cool the roof and surrounding air significantly.
  • A green roof absorbs airborne toxins, filters out pollution from acid rain, and respirates oxygen into the air.
  • A green roof provides substantial noise insulation.
  • A green roof provides additional land area, allowing for more biological diversity and wildlife habitat.
  • A green roof creates a more attractive, visual outdoor space and maintains a connection with nature.
