If you would like to organize a trash cleanup at a site that you know about, here are instructions on how to make it a success.
How to organize a cleanup at your own site:
- Determine the landowner. Your local tax assessor's office could be helpful.
- Call the landowner to notify him or her of your interest and seek permission.
- Once permission is granted to enter the property of the private landowner or business, scout out the site ahead of time to determine the amount of trash, hazards like steep slopes or poison ivy, appropriate number and age of volunteers, amount of time needed, etc.
- Determine how you will dispose of the trash the day of the clean-up. Will you haul it to a municipal landfill? Do NOT assume the landowner will dispose of the trash. Have a plan in place ahead of time.
- Our Checklist will help you ensure that your event is a success.
- Register your Cleanup. We are always interested in locating new safe sites to clean and your site may be listed on our web page, allowing others to help out as well.
- Don't forget to have fun discussions about trash cleanups before the cleanup. Reinforce why our watershed is important. We collected a few fun facts you can use to start the conversation. Click here for our Litter Info Sheet.
