Clean Creeks Project

WE WANT TO CLEAN UP THE LEHIGH RIVER!

SAND ISLAND/FRANKLIN PARK, BETHLEHEM:

Jordan Park bankLocation of Park: Follow Main Street in downtown Bethlehem to the Lehigh River. Map and detailed directions available at http://wildlandspa.org/lrwt/sandislandbethlehem_info.html.
Map shows public boat launch in the Sand Island West portion. Tennis courts, the Ice House (Performing Arts Center) and Monocacy Creek accessed from east side. Parking plentiful on the west side of Sand Island after you pass under bridge. Parking more difficult to find on busy days on the east side near tennis courts.

Location of trash in park: Litter accumulates between the parking area in front of the Ice House and the Lehigh River. Much of the river bank is fairly steep. Behind playground you can access flat trails along the canal and Monocacy Creek. Or gather your group on the Sand Island west side and cleanup along the river, around the parking lot and along the canal (access on upper end of parking lot under railroad trestle).

Participants: Easy access to most trash, though some sections are along the park road. This area is appropriate for all ages, but with younger volunteers make sure an adult is always nearby and groups are kept small so everyone can watch out for cars.

Restrooms Available

Picnic Tables NOT Available

Garbage Drop Location: Contact the Bethlehem Parks Department through their website at www.bethlehem-pa.gov or at 610-865-7081 to alert them when you would like to organize a cleanup. If you choose to cleanup the east end of Sand Island, they advise you to put your collected trash along the wall of the Ice House that faces the playground. If you would like to work on the west end of Sand Island, they ask that you put the garbage near the end of the wrought iron fence on the canal side. It is important to let them know if your cleanup occurred, so they know to pick up the trash as soon as possible. Separate out tires, scrap metal/appliances and also cans and bottles if clean. Always tightly close trash bags so the garbage is secure in the wind.

Caution: Always scan for hazards like broken glass or poison ivy, but since this site is in an urbanized area you have to look out for more dangerous trash like sharp nails from construction debris.
