WE WANT TO CLEAN UP THE LEHIGH RIVER!
KIMMETS LOCK PARK, ALLENTOWN:
Location of Park: Between Route 22 and Tilghman Street along Dauphin Street near the airport. Map and detailed directions http://wildlandspa.org/lrwt/kimmettslock.html
Parking is plentiful and lot is easy to find on Dauphin Street.
Location of trash in park: Litter accumulates around the parking lot (illegal dumping of tires, construction debris) and along train tracks. You can also walk along the canal path although it is not continuous along this section and must be accessed further north or south of this parking lot. There is also illegal dumping along Bradford Street (turn right out of parking lot and turn right at traffic light). The area along the Lehigh River is too steep for a cleanup. The suggested areas for cleanups here are relatively flat. Mostly trash from fisherman like soda bottles and snack food wrappers, but in this more industrial area illegal dumping of tires and construction debris is common.
Participants: Easy access to trash, though this somewhat secluded park and active train tracks nearby is best for teens or older. Appropriate for younger volunteers (10 and older) as long an adult is always nearby and groups are kept small .
Restroom Available Seasonally
Picnic Tables NOT Available
Garbage Drop Location: Contact Allentown’s Recycling & Bureau of Solid Waste to alert them that you would like to organize a cleanup. Provide them with information about the event and they will inform you where to put the trash to make sure it gets picked up promptly. Separate out tires, scrap metal/appliances and cans and bottles. Free trash bags and gloves available too. Always tightly close trash bags so the garbage is secure in the wind. Contact Christine Carter, Education & Enforcement Manager (carter@allentowncity.org) 610-437-8729
Caution: Always scan for hazards like broken glass or poison ivy, but since this site is in an urbanized area you have to look out for more dangerous trash like sharp nails from construction debris. |
