WE WANT TO CLEAN UP THE LEHIGH RIVER!
HUGH MOORE PARK, EASTON:
Location of Park: Along Lehigh River in Easton. Follow map and detailed directions from Route 78, http://wildlandspa.org/lrwt/hughmoorepark_info.html,
or get directions from the Internet from MapQuest and type in Hugh Moore Park, Easton PA 18042. Directions to get to this park are difficult if you are not familiar with this area, and signage for the park is hit or miss. You will need to study the directions ahead of time because there are lots of turns. Once you arrive, turn right after you go over bridge. Parking is plentiful in lot after picnic area. The Park entrance and exit are unusual one way access roads and bridges.
Location of trash in park: Illegal dumping occurs along the Lehigh Drive, the road that leads you to the park entrance. Litter accumulates around the picnic areas and this will eventually blow into the river or canal. Walk toward canal boat tours entrance from the parking lot and you can access flat trails along the canal to cleanup. Much of the Lehigh River banks will be overgrown by early summer and fairly steep, but perhaps a fun challenge for teens before overgrown.
Participants: Easy access to most trash, though one picnic area is along the park road. This area is appropriate for all ages, but with younger volunteers make sure an adult is always nearby and groups are kept small so everyone can watch out for cars.
Restrooms Available
Picnic Tables Available
Garbage Drop Location: Contact Chris Szarko’s cell 484-223-5045 from the Facilities Maintenance Department to let him know when you plan on conducting your cleanup event. If possible, place bags of trash near the blue dumpster by the maintenance building (you may drive up to the dumpster to unload the garbage, despite the “authorized access only” sign). If it is not possible, or if you find heavy trash like tires then leave what you have collected next to the large parking lot. Separate out tires, scrap metal/appliances and also cans and bottles if clean. Always tightly close trash bags so the garbage is secure in the wind.
Caution: Always scan for hazards like broken glass or poison ivy, but since this site may involve removing garbage from illegal dumping, look for more dangerous trash like sharp nails from construction debris. |
