American Chestnut Orchard Maintenance Volunteer

Our team of volunteers from last year with the American chestnut orchard in view.

Restoring the American Chestnut at Trexler Nature Preserve

The goal of this project is to help restore the American Chestnut Tree! The orchard has been expanded and now boasts nearly 900 young trees. The success of this project is dependent upon volunteer help to keep tree tubes clear of weeds, replace stakes that have fallen down, measure growth and make notes about observations.

Required Training: Attend one of the volunteer work days listed below to become acquainted with the project and receive training. These work days are held one Saturday per month. Once you are trained, you are welcome to visit the orchard at any time to work independently, or support future work days.

Tasks Include: Weeding, replacing stakes and tubes, identifying non-chestnut species and taking notes on your observations.

Working Conditions: There is no shade in the orchard, be sure to wear a hat, sunscreen and/or other protective gear. Gloves are a must!
