Stream Restoration of Monocacy Creek at Rt. 512

In May 2001, Wildlands Conservancy completed the "Stream Restoration of Monocacy Creek at Rt. 512" with funding ($39,000.00) provided by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources' "Keystone Acquisition and Development Program". Additional financial, technical, and volunteer support was also provided by QuestOne Decision Sciences Corporation, Summit Management and Realty Company, A-1 Construction, Hilltop Excavating, Inc., Chrin Brothers, Inc., the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, Greentree Nurseries, the Reidler Foundation, Northampton Area High School and Rodale Press, Inc. The project site was listed as a high priority remediation site within Wildlands Conservancy's "Monocacy Creek Rivers Conservation Management Plan." The project is 450 feet in length and is located on the property of QuestOne Decision Sciences Corporation in Hanover Township, Northampton County. The project scope included the placement of in-stream habitat improvements - a large stone deflector and saw-tooth rock deflectors - and the establishment of a riparian buffer to stabilize and re-vegetate eroded stream banks. The primary ecological objectives of this project were to improve the water quality, reduce non-point source pollution and improve aquatic and wildlife habitat within and along the Monocacy Creek. Education, enhanced recreational opportunities and improved aesthetics will also result from the completion of this project. The project also demonstrates the implementation of "Best Management Practices" within the property of a private corporation.
