Single-log Deflector A Single-log Deflector is a habitat improvement device that is used to create fish and aquatic macro-invertebrate habitat while at the same time directing stream flows away from stream banks, preventing stream bank erosion. Single-log Deflectors can be appropriately installed in riffles, runs and pools, but should be installed without creating a dam-like effect on the stream. Single-log Deflectors are used to encourage a stream to recover a more natural meander pattern (the natural bending of the stream). A Single-log Deflector utilizes a principle of flowing water that as water flows over objects, it will constantly flow off of them at right angles. Single-log Deflectors utilize this principle to pitch water away from stream banks. The Single-log Deflector should be trenched into the stream bank and weighted down with large stone. The log can also be anchored to the stream bottom with metal re-bar, preventing the log from being pulled out of the stream bank in high flows. The disturbed area is then covered with a layer of soil and seeded/planted with native vegetation. These devices will create scour pools at the tip of the log, ideal for young fish and macro-invertebrate habitat.
